In the Summer of 1969 we went on a long camping holiday through Germany, Bavaria, and Italy. Our destination was a small seaside resort on the Adriatic coast, called Porto Recanati. During the weeks we stayed at the campsite, the children learned to dive under the waves with their Italian friends and bring up starfish which they dried out on the sand, (probably cruel when I think about it now), and empty sea urchin cases.
One of the repeating themes of my work is the depiction of street games – either as single subjects or as playground scenes from my memory. Cricket, football, go karts, Yo Yos, hopscotch, skipping and bikes – these were our amusements and they were all played with friends in the street or at the seaside.
We will be uploading more and more from the archive as time goes on – today the theme is Food! Bringing some of the pieces together in one place the themes start to emerge – chips shops, ice cream and figures eating. Some of the images here are not sharp as unfortunately the photos were taken before digital technology and they are images of images. But the work and composition is still discernible if not all of the detail.
