Mill Engine Drawings

Here are drawings of two mill engines, with details of their history. When these two mills were operational, I drew them both in situ from two different viewpoints as shown.

The W & J Yates, Blackburn, 600h.p. Cross compound steam engine, built in 1884 is currently under restoration.   This engine drove a weaving shed at Jubilee Mill, Padiham, Nr. Burnley, Lancs. This mill closed in the mid 1980’s and the engine was later dismantled and relocated  to Masson Mills.  In 1783 Arkwright built his showpiece Masson Mills – Masson Mills working Textile Museum. Begun in 1830, the mill continued to produce cotton until 1979, making it one of the last steam powered mills in Burnley to close.  The steam engine which dates from 1887, has been restored with financial help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Science Museum Prism Fund.
The engine is now operated by an electric motor and can be seen in action on a number of occasions each year.
