Street Games of the Past

One of the repeating themes of my work is the depiction of street games – either as single subjects or as playground scenes from my memory. Cricket, football, go karts, Yo Yos, hopscotch, skipping and bikes – these were our amusements and they were all played with friends in the street or at the seaside.

New Uploads – Chip Shops and Other Foods

We will be uploading more and more from the archive as time goes on – today the theme is Food! Bringing some of the pieces together in one place the themes start to emerge – chips shops, ice cream and figures eating. Some of the images here are not sharp as unfortunately the photos were taken before digital technology and they are images of images. But the work and composition is still discernible if not all of the detail.

A Butcher Intervenes

When I was called up to do national service I was posted to Shropshire. On arrival at Wellington I was delighted to see such a beautiful thriving place and resolved to make a visit the next Saturday from my camp at C.O.D. Donnington, 4 miles away.  Whilst I was having a look around, my attention was drawn to a great commotion up a side street, and on investigation this scene (portrayed in my sketch and oil painting) greeted me. John Cowling of Colne

When I knew him he was in his eighties, very interested in horses and being in the open air.   I think he had made a living by being a Carter (moving and delivering material by horse drawn cart).
