When I was called up to do national service I was posted to Shropshire. On arrival at Wellington I was delighted to see such a beautiful thriving place and resolved to make a visit the next Saturday from my camp at C.O.D. Donnington, 4 miles away. Whilst I was having a look around, my attention was drawn to a great commotion up a side street, and on investigation this scene (portrayed in my sketch and oil painting) greeted me.

There was much screaming and physical violence going on between a man and his wife. A butcher came out of his shop and got in between them to try and separate them, whereupon they both set upon him. The picture is entitled ‘A butcher intervenes’.
