Nelson Fair

The travelling fair used to come every year to waste ground near to Victoria Park, opposite the football ground in Nelson. My family would visit every year, but sadly it no longer comes. However I saw an advert this morning for a fair in Colne. As it is August Bank holiday next week and people will traditionally be visiting fun fairs, I am highlighting some of the paintings and drawings from the carnival section.

I noticed an article in the Lancashire Evening Post last week – it caught my eye as it was about the Victory Factory on Chapel Street in Nelson, which was an imposing building for many years in the town until its demolition in 1988. It is believed that jelly babies were invented in Nelson. You can read about it in the article below.

The Baker’s at 134 Southfield Street

This is about my father John William Lonsdale born in Nelson, Lancashire on 7th July, 1896. The story might be of interest to anyone from the area, especially those who used to work in the mills nearby the baker’s shop on Southfield Street, up until the mid 1950s.

Camden Street Newsagent

Newsagents and Corner Shop

Situated on the corner of  Bradshaw Street and  Camden Street, Nelson. (owned by J & W.M Hopkinson)

Once numerous in the town these newsagents are very rare, especially when a delivery service is provided as in this shop.   The shop is open 364 days of the year providing a  valuable public service every day except Christmas Day, and selling basic commodities. At school leaving time it is thronged with youngsters who are dealt with in a very patient manner  by the proprietors. Continue reading “Camden Street Newsagent”
