This oil painting is of a motorbike and sidecar which was parked in a demolition area adjoining Railway St. Nelson.
I found the subject arresting and evocative, the sight of it stopped me in my tracks. I made the drawing immediately.

Transported fifty years out of it’s time, the dream getaway machine of the hungry thirties, parked at a kerbside of a once terraced street, the terraces demolished flattened, a black icon of working class aspiration – a childhood wonder object – a time machine.

Although passing the spot twice daily as I walked to and from the railway station, I never saw the object again. WL August 1982
